Tyre Tread Depth: UK Rules and Checks
Adequate tread helps clear water from beneath the tyre. Checking it regularly is a simple way to protect grip and stay legal.
The legal minimum
For cars, the minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread and around the entire circumference.
How to check
Use a calibrated tread-depth gauge at several points across and around each tyre. Wear indicators are useful visual markers but do not replace an accurate check.
Why even wear matters
The lowest measured point determines whether the tyre is legal. Edge or patch wear can reveal pressure, alignment or suspension faults.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I check tread depth?
Check monthly and before long journeys, and inspect more often if you notice pressure loss or uneven wear.
