When Should You Change Your Tyres?

Tyres should be replaced before they become unsafe or illegal. Regular visual and pressure checks make problems easier to spot.

Tread depth

UK law requires at least 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread around the full circumference. Performance in wet weather can reduce before that limit is reached.

Damage and ageing

Replace or professionally inspect tyres with exposed cords, sidewall bulges, deep cuts, cracking, repeated pressure loss or impact damage. Tyre age is shown by the four-digit date code on the sidewall.

Uneven wear

Wear on one edge or in isolated patches may indicate pressure, alignment, suspension or balancing problems. Fixing the cause helps protect the replacement tyre.

Frequently asked questions

Is the legal tread limit 1.6mm?
