What Causes Tyre Punctures?

Nails and screws are common causes, but potholes, damaged valves, corrosion and worn tread can also lead to air loss.

Common causes

Sharp road debris can penetrate the tread. Pothole impacts may damage the sidewall or wheel, while a leaking valve or rim seal can cause gradual pressure loss.

Can the tyre be repaired?

A repair depends on the location, size and condition of the damage. Sidewall and shoulder damage cannot normally be repaired safely. A technician must remove and inspect the tyre before deciding.

Reducing puncture risk

Maintain the recommended pressure, replace badly worn tyres and avoid driving through debris or severe potholes where possible.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive on a punctured tyre?

Stop as soon as it is safe. Continuing can damage the tyre beyond repair and may damage the wheel.
