How we balance your wheels

  1. 01

    Wheel off

The wheel is removed and old weights are checked or removed.

  2. 02

    Spin on the balancer

The machine spins the wheel and finds where it is heavier.

  3. 03

    Add weights

Small clip-on or stick-on weights are fitted at the exact points needed.

  4. 04

    Re-check and refit

The wheel is spun again to confirm, then refitted to the car.

Signs your wheels may be out of balance

Vibration has more than one possible cause, so these are signs to get checked rather than proof of a balancing problem.

  • Steering wheel shake that appears at a certain speed, often motorway speeds
  • Vibration through the seat or floor
  • Uneven or patchy tyre wear
  • Vibration that started after a new tyre or a pothole knock

Tyre balancing after fitting or a tyre change

Tyre balancing and wheel balancing describe the same service: balancing the tyre and wheel together as an assembly. We use a balancing machine and add weights where needed; this does not adjust wheel alignment.

Every time a tyre is removed and refitted, the weight around the wheel changes. That is why we offer balancing per wheel with every fitting. Balancing after a tyre change helps the new tyre wear evenly and keeps the drive smooth.

When balancing will not fix it

If the wheel is bent, the tyre is damaged, or the vibration comes from suspension, brakes or steering parts, balancing alone will not cure it. We will tell you if we see something that suggests another cause.

Balancing is not alignment

Wheel balancing (we do this)

  • Evens out weight around the wheel
  • Fixes vibration from an unbalanced wheel
  • Done with the wheel off the car

Wheel alignment (we do not offer this)

  • Adjusts the angles of the wheels
  • Addresses pulling to one side
  • Done with the car on an alignment rig

Questions about wheel balancing

Do you do wheel alignment or tracking?

No. We only offer wheel balancing. If your car pulls to one side, you may need alignment from a garage that offers it.

How often should wheels be balanced?

Whenever a tyre is fitted, and whenever you notice new vibration. There is no fixed mileage that suits every car.

Can I book balancing online?

Yes. Use the Book wheel balancing button to choose a time. Payment is taken at the garage.

Will balancing stop my steering vibration?

If the vibration is caused by an unbalanced wheel, yes. Other causes need different work; we will tell you what we find.
